Dandelightful: Weed that Gives Life - Part 1The poor dandelion gets killed off by so many who are fixated on having a weedless yard of grass. Grass that will provide them with nothing in return, except a golf turf. Dandelions are a precious source of numerous vitamins and minerals and can be used in so many ways for healing and nutrition as well as being packed with antioxidants making it a cancer fighter. The tea is dandelightful and the leaves are an excellent addition to any salad. The root is also very delicious in a stir fry or in bean soup, such as lima beans and your other favorite seasonings. You will love it and your body will thank you for the infusion of dense nutrition it provides. Dandelions have more usable calcium than milk and fights osteoporosis. That fact alone should be enough for everyone to start eating dandelions (the entire plant is consumable/useable, from the flower to the leaves and root). There are many recipes and remedies available online or contact me for suggestions. What are some of the great healing properties you ask? It is a blood purifier; lowers blood pressure; helps with digestive disorders; help with inflammatory conditions such as arthritis; helps acne conditions; it's an energy booster; liver tonic and diuretic plus it’s a good source of soluble fiber. This is a very short list. Do your own research and you will find that dandelion can help with so much; it is unbelievable that we are killing it and not harvesting it from our yards--free really good and healthy herbal food. You can find dandelion tea in most herb or health stores as well as the root, or you can harvest it yourself as long as you know for sure that it is a dandelion that has not been contaminated with herbicides, pesticides or fungicides. Harvest from the wild not along a polluted, highly traveled roadway, or from your very own yard that is of course, untreated. I would love to hear from you. Sunny’s Tips for
Eating Healthy During the Holiday Season
Drink a glass of water at least 30 minutes before your meal to fend off hunger & overeating When eating meat like turkey or ham, skip the skin and cut off any fatty parts Chew your food thoroughly to get the best digestion and to assimilate the most nutrients Slow down and enjoy the meal and the company you are with, take pauses between bites Focus on the veggies, salads and fruits first so you’ll eat least of the fattier & more filling foods Take smaller portions of stuffing, meats and sweets Stay hydrated with water (alcoholic and caffeinated beverages are dehydrating) Avoid sugary beverages such as sodas, sweetened teas and sports drinks Limit your servings of deserts/pies, cookies and candies, just pick one Take a relaxing walk with family/friends after the meal before settling in for the night |
Making Time for Wellness Not Healthcare
I don’t typically write articles like this. But I feel there is a need to make a powerful change. The American public needs a push, needs to wake up and be accountable for the direction of their health and wellness. Knowledge is power and people need to be properly educated. Don’t allow yourselves to be drones.
As a Nutritionist, I talk to people about eating whole foods, and implementing healthy lifestyles with wellness habits. I hear these statements being repeated among most everyone: “I don’t have time to prepare healthy meals,” or “I’m too busy to eat at home,” or I need to eat on the go to keep up with my hectic schedule,” or “Eating healthy is too expensive.” I beg to differ. Those are excuses. People do what they want to do. You do have time because you have control over the time you spend on everything you do. Unfortunately, you are choosing to live unhealthy. You are not that busy because you make choices that determine your schedule. Unfortunately, you are not a good manager of your time. It is not too expensive because the cost of preventative care is much less expensive than the resultant cost of hospitalization and prescription drugs. Unfortunately, you are not planning for your financial future and are spending your money on junk. Astronomical amounts of people will lose their nest eggs, if they even have one, and lose their homes due to medical bills and prescriptions, and they sadly may end up being a burden on the system and/or their families. Does that sound like where you really want to be? I didn’t think so. Think of it this way: Do you have the time (and money) to be sick or diseased, with a calendar full of doctor’s appointments, pharmacy visits, surgeries, or being stuck in bed feeling miserable?
I can help you learn how to be really healthy, and it has absolutely nothing to do with that ridiculous food pyramid, dieting, calorie counting or RDAs.
If this sounds too hard core and insensitive, well, it is supposed to be. Most people will not change unless they end up on their knees or flat on their backs. I’d like to help you avoid that unpleasant demise and coach you into a lifestyle change that will pay you dividends way into your senior years, allowing you to enjoy your children, your grandchildren and help keep you living independently.
I will educate you and offer suggestions to help you to avoid the SAD (Standard American Diet), which results in chronic illness and degenerative diseases. Is health and wellness your priority? If it is not, you can expect to have less and less time enjoying your life as you age, and then wishing you would have cared more about your health and wellness while your body still had a fighting chance.
Wouldn’t you feel better knowing exactly what ingredients are in the meals you are consuming on a daily basis? Prepared processed foods (and beverages) are dead, nutrient deficient, empty calories that are devoid of life sustaining substances, filled only with chemicals and toxins to lengthen their “shelf-life” but not your life—they weaken your system and make you susceptible to disease and sickness. Fresh and natural foods are living plants, organisms and enzymes that bring life, with vitality, sustained health and resistance to degenerative diseases.
So here is the bottom line: You are in control of the direction of your health. Do you want to build up the health of your body and enjoy your life with less medical bills and doctor visits, or would you rather be dependant on the failed “sick-care” health system, thereby allowing the local pharmacy to continue to draw you in for drug after drug to “cover up” the never-ending symptoms of your ills caused by your nutritionally deficient diet? Any person in their right mind would choose health over illness. The problem is that our society has been duped into believing they have to take drugs and vaccines to be healthy. That is exactly what they want you to believe so you remain weak and susceptible, so they can keep your money in their pockets, and keep you dependant on them. The exact opposite is true. You have control—you can change the direction of health care on your own. Be empowered.
I too used to be a victim of the sick care health system. I also once believed that I just was one of those people – you know, that person who is always catching a cold, flu, bronchitis, sinusitis, upper respiratory infections, bladder infections, sore throats, headaches, constipation, and the list goes on. The truth is you can build up your immune system to resist these things with holistic health practices and proper nutrition. I’ve actually done it. And it’s not difficult. You just have to want health and choose to not be a part of that “sick care” model. It is a decision you have to make—you have to choose to eat and live a healthy lifestyle—it is a lifestyle change. No one can do it for you. Just like exercising and working out to get fit—I cannot do the exercise or work out for you to be fit. However, I can walk with you and coach you on how to be healthy. I have developed a program to do just that. It’s called the Vitamin D Pep ‘n Step©. I walk with my clients outside so that they can get some fresh air, some sunshine (Vitamin D), and I educate them on how to turn their unhealthy lifestyle habits into healthy habits.
If I could only give you two pieces of advice, it would be the following:
(1) you must consume enough water every day (divide your weight by 2 and that equals the ounces you should drink – i.e. 100 pound person should drink 50 ounces of water each day (or more). Find a container for your water that shows the measurement in ounces so you know how much you are consuming and keep that container with you all day or keep several of them around (your home, car, work, school) and drink reverse osmosis when possible; and
(2) stop drinking sodas, especially diet sodas.
Just those two things alone can be a dramatic start to achieving health and wellness. Water is a detoxifier; it flushes your system of unwanted toxins and poisons. All of your body’s systems need enough water to function properly and optimally. Dehydration is a primary cause of many illness, aches and pains. Sodas (particularly diet sodas) are hugely unhealthy. I could write a whole article on just why sodas should not be sold for human consumption. They contain an overabundance of sugars, artificial colors, artificial flavors and artificial sweeteners (aspartame), which are very potent neurotoxins and cause headaches, vision problems, endocrine system problems and nervous system disorders, not to mention that most diet sodas also contain alarmingly high levels ofphosphoric acid, which is a substance that causes acidity to increase greatly in your body, suppressing immune system functioning, weakening your bones and also contributing to kidney stones (just to name a few).
Furthermore, many of those sodas contain caffeine in excessive amounts which taxes your adrenal system. Moderate and high consumers of caffeine are found to have higher levels of anxiety and depression and have the greatest incidence of stress related medical problems, and it also reduces memory function. The more caffeine you consume, the more your body and brain become insensitive to its own natural stimulants (dopamine and adrenaline), causing adrenal exhaustion.
It is my hope and prayer that you will have read this and realized that a change is necessary and that you will take the steps necessary to change and be accountable to yourself and your family realizing that you are in control of your health and wellness.
I would love to hear from you. Contact me to learn more about how you can be empowered to control the direction of your health and wellness.

Want Some Valentine’s Day Love & Affection: Think Feet and Hands!
That’s right, I said it…A simple hands and feet massage. Who wouldn’t enjoy such a loving massage from your Valentine? It is intimate, relaxing, a sign of caring affection, and provides both the giver and the receiver satisfaction of loving touch. Loving touch is healing, and we all need it, plus it doesn’t cost anything but time and effort. In this economy everyone is looking for an affordable gift to give their beloved Valentine.
Massage and reflexology are two of the most ancient forms of healing touch. Reflexology is used for healing and pain relief. Massage and loving touch have no harmful side effects, only benefits. We all desire relief from stress and pain; and this relief is a main benefit of these natural healing methods of touch.
As indicated below, basic foot and hand massage and/or reflexology can help to treat a wide number of health problems.
A study was published in Pain Management Nursing that indicated how massaging the feet and hands for as little as 20 minutes helped to dramatically reduce pain the day after surgery. The study observed subjects who were in recovery from surgical procedures including gastrointestinal, gynecological, urological, head, neck or plastic surgery. The study showed that massaging of the feet and hands is not only inexpensive for pain management, but also highly effective.
There is scientific research that shows how loving touch and massage can help with a variety of health conditions, including but not limited to: (in no particular order)
Should you have an interest, I can provide you with a referral to a qualified and experienced reflexologist.

Keys to Keep the Pitter-Patter in Your Heart
Did you know that your circulatory system contains around 100,000 miles of blood vessels, and that your heart beats 100,000 times, pumping 2,000 gallons of blood per day? Wow, we really are intricately made; therefore, we need to love this extraordinary body-machine.
- Take a deep breath and…relax;
- Reduce alcohol consumption;
- Stop smoking; and
- Get moderate exercise instead of extreme exercise, walking is recommended.
- Seven to ten servings of fresh fruit and veggies each day, raw when possible. Chew your food well to release the phytochemicals and flavonoids. A great way to get all those servings is through juicing or blenderizing.
- Eat some fish and supplement with omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) preferably from fish oils (don’t buy cheap brands), but also, flaxseed oils to reduce hardening of the arteries and overall heart health.
- Eat cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage) to reduce stroke by 32 percent.
- Antioxidants, processed foods & sugar: Consuming high quantities of antioxidants (carotenoids, flavonoids) from fruits and veggies, including more fiber and much less sugar, tremendously reduces the incidence of cardiovascular disease and strokes. Plus, eating lots of antioxidant, nutrient-dense foods can radically reduce the damage following a heart attack or stroke.
- Reduce omega-6 fats (corn oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, peanut oil, canola oil) because they promote inflammation.
- Limit your butter and discontinue all margarine.
- Avoid commercial salad dressings by making your own (basic extra virgin olive oil with apple cider vinegar and spices to taste is a good start to expand on).
- Reduce meat consumption (no more than 4-6 oz. per meal, particularly beef and pork, as they are high in saturated fats.
- There is evidence that drinking milk contributes to heart attacks and strokes, avoid milk from cows.
- Avoid or radically reduce your intake of hydrolyzed proteins, and MSG (monosodium glutamate) found in many processed foods because it over stimulates the nerves of the heart, and may induce heart attack symptoms such as crushing chest pain and shortness of breath. These symptoms also result if you are suffering from low levels of magnesium.
- Avoid stimulants including caffeine, and especially aspartame.
- Drink more fresh, pure water (reverse osmosis when possible)
- White tea has the highest antioxidant levels, and its flavonoids protect collagen thereby improving blood vessel strength.
- Avoid coffee because it can raise blood pressure and contribute to cardiac muscle irritability and increase homosysteine levels.
- Drinking very moderate amounts of red wine particularly with bread, has been shown to reduce hardening of the arteries due to its flavonoid content.
- Elevate your magnesium (co-enzyme) tissue levels: It increases blood flow through your coronary arteries and can prevent arrhythmias; it is a heart attack preventer (slight anti-coagulant). If you have cardiovascular disease, you may be magnesium deficient, which can complicate the disease itself. You can have a normal blood value and very low tissue levels that can put you at a high risk for atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), and associated complications including coronary heart disease, strokes, and poor blood supply to the extremities (peripheral vascular disease). Magnesium dilates blood vessels thus improving the flow of blood to your heart. Smokers have low magnesium levels.
- A powerful antioxidant to use is alpha-lipoic acid. To improve heart muscle contraction and oxygen supply, supplement with CoQ10, L-carnitine (allows cells to metabolize fats for energy) and B complex vitamins. CoQ10 can reduce the number and severity of angina.
- The US Department of Health and Human Services concluded those who are susceptible to fluoride toxicity are persons with deficiencies in magnesium, Vitamin C and who have cardiovascular disease.
- The amino acid, lysine, and Vitamin C can reduce lipoprotein(a) levels.
- Additionally, Vitamins C, E and garlic extract protect fats from oxidation—garlic has been known to reverse hardening of the arteries. (Note that too much sugar interferes with the absorption of Vitamin C.)
- With correct balance of Copper and Zinc in your system, they maintain blood vessel strength and prevent them from leaking.
- The amino acid, taurine may prevent thrombosis associated with heart attacks.
- Ginkgo Biloba (also contains flavonoids) increases blood flow, thins the blood, suppresses arrhythmias, strengthens collagen and elastin in the blood vessel walls, and prevents oxidation of LDL cholesterol.
- Pycnogenol (increases blood flow), and grape seed extract, both inhibit excitotoxicity caused from glutamate.
- Hawthorne berry (extract), a powerful antioxidant, improves coronary artery flow and reduces the incidence of angina, and lowers blood pressure (do not use with blood pressure prescriptions, confer with your doctor).
- Garlic and arginine dilate blood vessels.

Start today with an apple a day! Minimizing your risk of cancer
Today 1 in 2 people develop cancer as compared to 1 in 10 in 1930. You can minimize your risk of cancer through taking personal accountability by preventing and changing unhealthy personal habits, and making more educated consumer choices. Potential risk factors include your environment, smoking, unhealthy eating, alcohol consumption, lack of exercise, over-exposure to the sun, and genetics. The following are some suggestions and a summary of guidelines to help educate you in making choices to help reduce your risk of cancer.
Exposure to harmful chemicals in food products can be limited by supporting organic farmers or growing your own garden using organic methods. Try visiting the Dallas Farmer’s Market or the White Rock Lake Local Markets to find organic foods. You could be exposed to methylmercury by consuming contaminated fish and marine products. Thermal power stations are the most polluting source of mercury emissions. You may be exposed to microbial contaminates by consuming contaminated drinking water or by recreational (swimming) water through the skin. Instead of drinking commercially bottled waters, drink reverse osmosis water. Presently, of all cancers studied, the strongest connection can be made between diets high in fat and colon cancer. Apples support a healthy colon because they contain soluble fiber called pectin. A medium-sized apple contains approximately 12 mg of vitamin C, but the antioxidant impact is the same as 1500 mg of vitamin C. Apples also contain potassium, which helps to regulate water balance, helps neuromuscular function, and helps regulate blood pressure. Phytochemicals that are found in fruits and vegetables can reduce the formation of carcinogens, slow tumor growth, and protect your DNA. Citrus fruits contain terpenes, caffeic acid, and ferulic acid, which aid in elimination and blocking of the effects of carcinogens. Furthermore, the ferulic acid binds with nitrates and reduces the formation of cancer causing nitrosamines. Indoles are one of the main cancer fighting chemicals found in cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower. An antioxidant spice called turmeric helps dissolve bad fats, has antibacterial properties, and also protects the blood vessels. Turmeric contains an ingredient called curcumin that researchers say may help suppress and destroy the blood cancer multiple myeloma. A study done in Japan found that curcumin prevented cancer and stopped tumors from growing. Avoid sugar (glucose) because tumor cells thrive on sugar. You can try using gymnema sylvestre, an Ayurvedic herb that helps to curb cravings for sugar. Ayurvedic principles suggest falling asleep by 9-10 p.m. each night. Warm milk contains tryptophan and is the precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter that promotes sleep and reduces the effects of stress. During sleep, vital hormones are produced that are important for the immune system, such as interleukin-2, which increases the production of cytokines and acts as a free radical fighter. Try drinking a glass of lemon and honey water each morning to help purify the system. Many carcinogens are fat soluble, therefore, losing weight can reduce or stop some cancers. Aerobic exercise burns fat. Try moderately exercising every morning to nearly 50% of your capacity. Although over-exposure to sun may contribute to skin cancer, 15-20 minutes of sunlight exposure a day is helpful for your body to make the vital vitamin D (which is actually a hormone), and can support your immune system and help prevent osteoporosis. Cigarette smoking causes 90% of lung cancers. Hypnosis and meditations are a couple techniques that have been shown to aid in quitting smoking. A reduction in the consumption of alcohol can a reduce women’s risk for breast cancer. A research study found that women who consume two or more drinks per day have 40-100% higher blood levels of estrogen than women who don’t drink. Be cautious of your work environment. Workers who make brake shoes may have exposure to asbestos, which is a naturally occurring mineral, and may have an increased risk for lung cancer. Another risk is exposure to benzene, a solvent for petrochemicals, and is believed to cause leukemia. Copper smelting workers are exposed to arsenic, which increases their risk for lung and skin cancers. Marie Curie is one of the scientists who discovered radium and she died from exposure to radiation. Avoid unnecessary use of X-rays, including dental X-rays. Exposure to radiation fallout can increase the risk of thyroid cancer in children, not only at the time of exposure but also later in life. Finally, your attitude can also play a role in your rate of healing. As reported in the New York Times, a study using first-term law students presented a correlation between optimism and high immune systems. The same techniques suggested for cancer prevention apply to prevention of heart disease as well as other illnesses. Hopefully you can see that with a plan of action changes can be made in personal choices of food, lifestyle, environment, and chemical use that have an immediate and direct impact on your health to decrease your cancer risk. Furthermore, you can help influence future generations by getting involved with community action and voicing suggestions and concerns as a consumer and tax payer; becoming actively involved with the political agendas of local government programs and initiatives; and seeking alternative approaches from experts in the field of cancer and alternative medicine, which could include, among other alternative techniques: meditation or prayer, and healing herbs and essential oils. http://www.examiner.com/alternative-medicine-in-dallas/start-today-with-an-apple-a-day-minimizing-your-risk-of-cancer |
